4.56 R&P with front and rear lockers,

In my Jeep I am running 4.56 gears with 35” tyres. I chose these gears because I believe it was the best choice for on / off road. A 4.88 gear ratio would have been better off road and could give me more power on road, but the 4.56 will give better economy as it will rev slightly lower when driving on the motorway. The gears are Yukon gears. I have had them in since mid 2004 and I am very happy with them on and off road. The off road crawl speed give much better control than the stock gears on bigger tyres. Even with 35” tyres the crawl speed is slower than that when I was on standard tyres and gears.

Choosing which lockers to get was much more difficult. ARB’s are defiantly my 1st choice, but my funds just couldn’t stretch to the cost of the ARB’s.
Up front I went for a Detroit ez locker, I was lucky enough to buy this cheap from a friend who was changing to ARB front and rear. I found out that this locker would be invisible in 2wd on road and provide excellent traction off road. So I was happy to have this installed.

As for the rear, I went with a powertrax no-slip locker. The Powertrax No-Slip Traction System is the latest design in traction adding differential technology. It combines the smooth operation of a limited-slip differential, with the traction performance of a locking differential. A precise synchronization mechanism eliminates the ratcheting sounds typical of other locking differentials. Special gear and spring design reduce the backlash and therefore driveline windup. Only ultra strength material is used which is 67% stronger than titanium.
Installation is simple because no ring and pinion set-up is required. In addition, no special tools or oils are needed.
I can say from driving on the road with the locker I was pleasantly surprised. I have driven it in terrible conditions (we have had lots of heavy rain and floods in England, snow and ice in winter). It is almost unnoticeable. I have had the odd click and bang, when at low speeds turning a tight corner, but that’s no big deal. Maybe I don’t drive it hard enough to notice it.
As for off road, this setup was amazing. This thing just walked up the axle twisted hills with no fuss. In the past I have been having to give it plenty of speed on obstacles it will just walk up now. As for the front locker, I have had no problems with steering (only feels slightly more difficult to turn the wheel, no big deal though).
